Airlangga University got another award through one of its academic staff. Prof. Dr. Subijanto Marto Sudarmo, dr., SpA(K), a professor from the Faculty of Medicine, was awarded a MURI record for his success. He was listed in Indonesian Record Museum (MURI) because of his success in promoting his 4 students into the best graduates in Unair’s Doctoral Program.
Anang Endaryanto,dr,SpAK, IGM Reza Gunadi.,dr,SpA(K), I Dewa Gede Ugrasena, dr, SpA(K), and Haryono Utomo, drg., SP.Ort, were the four promovendus who had completed their doctoral degree in less than 3 years, and graduated with summa cum laude. Dr. Anang started his doctorate degree in the 2004/2005 academic year, completed his dissertation in three years, and was graduated on 29 July 2007. He was graduated with cumlaude through his dissertation on the response of immune system to probiotic in allergic reaction. Dr.IGM Reza Gunadi completed his dissertation on the effect of lactobacills plantarum probiotic, also in only three years. Dr. Ugrasena dan Dr.Haryono Utomo were also had completed their study within three years. Although Prof. Subijanto was a pediatrics, he was capable to supervise promovendus from different fields of study. “He has a solid scientific knowledge, so there was no problem in supervising my dissertation, eventhough I am from dentistry. Other people may think that it was not really suitable, but in fact, he was really execellent,” said Dr. Haryono.
In a press conference held at the Rectorate building on Friday (5/3), Prof. Subijanto expressed that awarded a MURI record was very special to him. “Actually, it was not me who was excellent, but my four students were the ones who had strong will and capability, so they were able to be graduated cumlaude. My duty was only as a promotor, and I thanked them for trusting me (in supervising them),” he said humbly.
In reality, it is indeed not easy to supervise a student to graduate with excellent results. Therefore, it is not a coincidence when a supervisor is able to guide his promovendus to complete his study cumlaude, especially when the promovendus is more than one. In achieving that, there should be an excellent collaboration between the supervisor and the promovendus. “I tried to give as much time as I could for the students,” Prof. Subijanto said. And in consultation sessions, he and the students would have a deep discussion about the dissertation progress, and in every consultation there should be a progress report.
“I often remind my students not to come empty-handed, but come-armed.,” he said. “For example, those 4 students of mine, they have had very good concepts( of what they want to do) even before I became their supervisor,” he added. His excellent supervisory skills were also admitted by his four students. “He had a very good performance, and very democratic. Prof. Subijanto never ceased to learn something new. He also tried very hard to be a good discussion partner. I didn’t feel like discussing with a senior, more like with a friend,” said Anang Endaryanto, one of his promovendus.
As a discussion partner, Sunbijanto was democratic. When he was not familiar with a topic, he never hesitated to learn it from his students. “I think he deserves this award. He has done a lot in education and in his field of study,” added Anang.
A Merry Award Given Ceremony
The MURI record was given by Jaya Suprana on Sunday, (7/3) in Garuda Mukti Room, Rectorate Building, Airlangga University. According to Jaya Suprana, the ceremony was so far the merriest, as there was also performances by the 3 MURI Goddess and the Nusantara Pentaboys acapella.
“I actually want to change the sinistic view in our society. Some people said that MURI was too generous, sort of like ‘I can also do that’ view. Well, if you feel you can do it, why don’t you?” Jaya Suprana said in the occasion. There are three standards in determining a MURI record, “the most”, “the first” and “the rare”. However, even those simple standards involve a not-so-simple research. For example, before deciding that Prof. Subijanto was able to be awarded the award, he has to conduct a survey to the Ministry of National Education, to ensure that no one has done, or outdone, what Prof. Subijanto has achieved.
